i was having a similar thought today, and was wondering why people choose to have children and I reckon most of the reasons why people choose to have children and shy away from adoption is usually a selfish reason.
I heard a radio programme about a woman who'd made the choice not to have children and claimed many women hate her. A middle aged lady called the show and said she'd made the decision to be sterillized when she was a teenager.

I don't see anything wrong with it? I think it's better for people not have children if they don't want to, and people who do should prepare themselves for it, mentally, physically and spiritually as well.

Pleasure and pain are two elements--but what about joy? Marcus' rendition of the "Sky Daddy" almost gets there. I haven't time to go into all the arguments that point toward the existence of a Creator, but if one were to tip the scale in that direction, and further, toward Christ, who teaches us what to do with suffering, then the possibility of joy emerges, even in extreme suffering, and certainly joy in life as it comes, mixed with pain and pleasure and delight and surprise. And that is to say nothing of what comes after life in the form that we know it.

No one who counts only what our physical eyes can see even understands physics or biology or chemistry. No one who totals life as nothing more than a see saw between pleasure and pain ever wrote a poem, or ever loved.

How many of those who are horrified by Bennatars thesis, would agree with him if all supernatural beliefs in possible divine salvation are removed..not left in, remaining in doubt, but removed utterly from the argument? I think the experience of Sentient beings can be compared to being in a plauge city. the plauge is 100% lethal...some suffer horribly some less so. It is absolutely, completely virulent; everyone in the city will die from it, you, your children, your parents, your heros, your pet dog, everyone. there is no escape. you cannot leave the city. Enjoy! hey, try to look on the bright side! maybe theres a benevolent, all powerful sky daddy (or mommy) who is going to save us. we have no reason other than stark raving terror to want to belive this but try. it might ease your days.

essentially you sound like a commentator on NPR. http://tinsmithink.wordpress.com/2009/09/26/death-toll-in-iraq-npr/

I think the fact that you mention people's social role (as parents, etc) is enough to cause a pause than the photo you included. This photo still means nothing to me because I don't know these people. I am side tracked by the thought of " do they know you used them on your blog??"

Simply put, research that causes unnecessary harm to animals is bad too! Medical research makes the the issue fuzzy, of course. The lives of humans are more important than the lives of animals, and the development of life saving drugs often involves animal experiments. On the other hand, it is also wrong to cause animals terrible suffering and pain.

Maybe the reason that we focus on food is that the ethics involved are very simple since there are plentiful and easily accessible alternatives to meat. Medical research is more complicated.

The sheep graze happily on the grass every day until the Eid and then on that very day they start walking backwards. It's the most horrifying thing to see. Luckily I always had beef while everyone enjoyed mutton :) (ok, sorry)

But I think the main focus is always on the food industry and on eating behavior. I end up comforting myself with the nature argument "I need food, therefore I eat". So what about animals killed, driven to insanity, impregnated with strange DNA for research purposes?
